The common jackal is one of the most widespread carnivores in Israel. In the fifties, it was almost completely extinct due to intentional poisoning, and after an extended period of disappearance, it has returned to live among us today. The cries of the jackal are once again heard every night throughout the valley, and they are often seen in fields in the early morning hours and at sunset.

Today, wild jackals hunt for food and eat the carcasses of birds and animals that they find on farms. In order to control the size of their population, which is constantly increasing, jackals are legally shot, and disposing of waste and dead farm animals in open garbage dumps is prohibited.

Today, we are aware of the importance of predators for maintaining a natural, healthy ecological system. Their role is to regulate the growth of the herbivore populations. But every few years, when the conditions for jackals become too crowded, rabies appears and veterinary intervention is necessary for the wild animals, as well as for pet dogs.
